come from? What was it? Why me? Finding no answers as usual, he continued

watching until the glow faded away, leaving behind his hand as it usually was,

its fine coating of blond hairs contrasting against tanned skin, the boy’s flesh pale

and lifeless in comparison. A rivulet of cool sweat trickled down his belly. A

sudden and unexpected exhaustion sucked away his next breath. “I’ve done all I

can.”

The knot of pain between the boy’s closed eyes eased, and the wrinkle

between smoothed. The rise and fall of the thin chest under the covers turned

slow and steady. At least he’d bought a little time for the tiny someone who was

much loved. So loved, someone would murder for him. Remember, Mr. Fix-It, the

child is blameless.

The cold muzzle of a pistol brushed a lock of Court’s hair across his face.

“Shoot me if you must. There’s nothing else I can do.” Court turned, facing

the man with the gun. So easy… Yes, it would be so easy to kill him, wouldn’t it?

Just one touch to the chest and… I can stop his heart. He’d done it before. Perhaps something in his gaze revealed what he was thinking, for the man backed up a

hasty step. The knotted scar in Court’s belly twisted and ached when it hadn’t

done so in months. Court blinked the idea away. What would be the point? He

wasn’t a killer.

I’m a fixer.

But there was Dane…

The chair in the corner beside the bed beckoned, and Court lowered himself

into it, trying to keep eye contact with Dane while simultaneously watching for

guns to appear and listening to his kidnapper whispering to the newly awakened

child. His rest didn’t last long, the seat not even warming before the grandfather

leaned back up and said, “Get out! All of you.”
